Slam!

FRESNO STATE -- Documents
made public today in NCAA letters, link former Fresno State adviser
to academic fraud. The adviser allegedly acted in bad faith when
he participated in an ongoing cheating scandal that led to the
current NCAA investigation.
Fresno State acknowledged on June 29,
2002 that it received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA
following a preliminary inquiry about possible Athletic Program
rule violations from 1995 through 2002.
The NCAA's infractions committee confirmed
that further sanctions against Fresno State were being considered
at that time.
In Fresno State's favor is the apparent
self-reporting by officials of violations recently discovered
as to the questioned eligibility of a one basketball student.
Also, there is another reported allegation just made known, as
a result of a joint review by the NCAA and the Fresno State officials
about a possible women's athletic student basketball player.
Fresno State has been under a cloud of
suspicion for nearly two years. After twenty-two months of investigation
and accusations, Fresno State has now received notice of an official
inquiry from the NCAA. On June 28th, if this matter has not been
resolved and appropriate discipline administered to the offending
students athletes, Fresno State will be facing the inglorious
demise of competitive Fresno State athletics.
